Share your Commute
Like Uber but designed for people who want to share their commute.
You plug in where you will be going and at what time.
For a driver you will put in how far out of your way you are willing to go to pickup/drop off. They would also put in how many seats and other possible restrictions or capacities, example no dogs or no babies (car seats could be arranged if commute sharing was continuous). Drivers could also select if they are willing to be passengers visa-versa.
Drivers could then click if they want equal compensation or a little extra. Fairs would then be determined by gas prices, general upkeep and how far you are going out of your way to compensate your for time and gas. The little extra would be determined by the app maybe in levels, but not determined by the driver.
For the passenger once they entered in their destination they would be given the list of options/prices and they could select if they are willing to start at a subway or bus stop or parking lot as well. Note: drivers could drive to other drivers to limit drivers/cars on the road.
This would need to have a similar safety mechanism for drivers as Uber does with profiles for both drivers and passengers.
Obviously, this does not have to be used only for commutes.
The benefit of this is to limit cars on the road, people's transit time, build community and help out drivers.
This idea ultimately comes from long hours commuting into work, whether I was driving and watching the hundreds of other single occupant cars doing the same trip or riding transit and going far out of my way to get to a location. I also had the experience after driving into work for years and then meeting someone (while playing Pokemon go) who was doing practically the same commute but by transit. It never quite worked as he moved offices weeks later, but I often think about the missed opportunity for those two, three years.
